I-1-71 Rare Acoma pottery cylinder jar.
Acoma Pueblo is located about an hour and a half west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. These Indians belong to the southern branch of the Keres linguistic family and are culturally part of a group of pueblos called the Puname Pueblos that in addition to Acoma include Zia, Santa Ana and Laguna Pueblos. Of these, Acoma and Laguna produce a nearly indistinguishable pottery of the very finest thin walled construction. This unusual example is a classic Acoma polychrome type which has its roots in pre-historic Anasazi black on white pottery from the Chaco Canyon cultures where these cylinder jars were a distinct part of the pottery tradition.
This example has central red crosses for the main motif with elaborate hatched backgrou inches d and black and white terraced designs.
