Santa Clara is one of the Tewa speaking pueblos of New Mexico. Located on the Rio Grande River just south of Espanola. It is famous for its highly polished black pottery and for its red pottery, either of which could be left plain or decorated with carved and, less commonly, painted designs. This is a classic example of one of their early black wedding vases with double spout and fluted rim. Dating to the late 19th century, these jars became particularly popular among tourists by the early 20th century.
