The people of Zuni Pueblo speak what is known as a language isolate which means that it has no relationship to any other native language and is simply called Zuni. Their pueblo can be found in west central New Mexico about 30 miles from Gallup. The Zuni were particularly famous for their fetish carvings which were originally used most often as hunting fetishes but could also include many other types.
Contemporary fetishes are often elaborately carved portraying many animals not made in the old days. This simple coyote fetish is made from pipestone and most likely dates to the 1920's or 30's. its long projecting tail is an attribute of coyote fetishes.
