G-8-97 Pueblo pottery button collection.
The pueblo Indians of New Mexico are famous for their various types of pottery items made both for their own use and for sale. This collection of pottery buttons is the largest groupings of such buttons we have encountered. Due to the rarity of these buttons, few people are aware of their existence. Those examples most often encountered are from Zia Pueblo of which there are 9 in this grouping. They are defined by their softly rounded forms and their crisply executed designs. These were only made by a few potters and are usually found in groups of two, four or (rarely) 6. Of greater significance are the 26 pottery buttons of various sizes that would appear to be from Santa Ana Pueblo done in a much less sophisticated style and using designs seldom seen on Zia pottery.
The buttons in this collection range in size from 1" in diameter to as large as 2 1/4" in diameter (unquestionably the largest button we have seen). It would seem that the majority of these buttons were made between the late 1930's through the 1950's.
These 35 buttons are mounted in a shadow box frame that measures 13 1/4"w. by 16 1/4"L. A rare and significant collection of pueblo pottery buttons. $4,500.00
