I-M-176 Aya kachina.
The Aya kachina is named for his case mask which resembles the rattles made from gourds that are given to the children during the Powamu dances and initiation rites. He is one of the non-dancing kachinas that belong to a group called the racers. These kachinas appear during the spring dances and challenge men from the village to foot races. If the men win then they receive a prize but if they loose, then they are punished with each punishment being specific to the type of kachina in the race. There are two types of Aya kachinas and each carries a yucca leaf whip giving the looser a sound swat or if he wins then piki bread as his reward.
