G-1-10 Pueblo necklace (New Mexico). Perhaps the most traditional of southwestern necklaces are what is called the nugget necklace. Nugget necklaces (so called because of the chunks or nuggets of turquoise that are so prominent a part of these necklaces) were the quintessential necklace for both Navajo and Pueblo peoples. Their origins are to be found among the Pueblo peoples who, since prehistoric times, have produced stone and shell bead necklaces with Santo Domingo Pueblo, in historic times, being the most famous for what are called heshi necklaces.
The heshi are hand drilled shell and stone beads. This fine old necklace is comprised of an interesting combination of shell heshi beads, turquoise beads and turquoise nuggets. Dating to the 1920's or 30's, this necklace measures 12 1/2"long (or approximately 26" in circumference). $395.00
